Well done to IWCA Athletics Club runner, 42 year old Mauro Gubinelli, who returned to the city of his birth to complete the popular Rome Marathon in 4hrs 58 minutes on Sunday 18th March. Mauro, who proudly paraded the black and white stripes of our club through the historic streets of the Italian capital, is very pleased with his time, having stated initially that he would just be happy to make it to the finish line in his first 26 miler.
We shouldn't underestimate the commitment that a parent and shift worker such as Mauro needs to train for a full marathon, so hats off to him for a successful mission accomplished.
It must be said though that, unlike our team mate, it is highly unlikely that a night on the town featured in the training schedule of the Kenyan and Ethiopian elite runners that traditionally lead the pack in the Maratona Di Roma!
Unfortunately our ever sociable team mate managed to hook up with some old friends the night before the race which led to our man getting to bed a lot later than he intended, sacrificing valuable sleep. To cap this, the taxi taking him to the race broke down causing him to miss the start. Full credit then to Mauro for not letting these set-backs put him off his stride.
