Last Saturday, fifteen of our youngsters crammed around the kitchen table set up in the madhouse that was the living room of Graça and Stuart's place for the club Christmas dinner.
While the coaches busied themselves in the kitchen, the children tucked into Christmas food like there was no tomorrow, pulling Christmas crackers, popping party poppers and all the rest of it.
After the meal the club awards - voted in a secret ballot of all those present - were announced by coaches, David Troth and Simon O'Keefe.
The award for ‘Best Club Person (person who had put most time and effort into the club) went to coach Stuart Craft, with wife Graça coming a close second. Stuart was visibly moved by the recognition by his team mates of his passion and commitment to the club. Graça called for a recount!
The award for ‘Most Improved Runner’ went to 11 year old David Howells with Robert Merry coming in at number two. David did a double take and had to be reassured that it was actually his name that had been called out, but once the result had sunk in, his face lit up with a proud, beaming smile.
The Award for ‘Athlete of the Year’ went to Peter Wright, with Shawn Merry taking second place. Peter was very pleased with his award as his acceptance speech indicates: “Whoop whoop, yeahhh!!”
The results were very close and everyone in the club deserves a pat on the back for their excellent efforts over the past year, so well done to all!
Once the table was cleared and dismantled by the coaches and the older boys, the youngsters cracked on with the party games before finally heading off home late into the evening.
Coaches aside, a special mention must go to Emmy for her help serving and clearing up (and the odd bit of crowd control!) and Shawn and Robert for their help with the clearing up.
