A proud Peter Wright romped home to take first place at this afternoon's annual Sandford on Thames 3 Mile River Run. We decided to opt for the 3 mile race over the 5 mile one in order to save taxing Peter and Stuart's legs too much for tomorow's Watlington 10k hill run.
From the off, at the unusual start time of 5pm, trainee coach, Peter, headed the pack and comfortably held first place until the finish line with his team mate, Stuart, battling hard to second place but unable to close the 4 second gap between them. Simon O'Keefe took third (adult) place with Isobel and Graca Craft also doing well (though Graca would have probably improved her time if she hadn't stopped for a chin wag with the marshals at the half way water station!)
The course was a mostly flat one which lent itself to a fast race and both Stuart and Isobel recorded new 3 mile PB's.
Though we had never took part in the 25 year old Sandford River Run before, despite it being on our doorstep, we were very famiiar with the route, having trained around Sandford and along the river regularly over recent years. The course runs from Sandford Park, through Sandford Lock and along the Thames Towpath, in the direction of Abingdon, before coming back on itself to finish in Sandford Park.
The event was a relaxed, friendly and informal affair that we enjoyed very much. We'd like to thank the organisers from Sandford Vilage for their warm welcome and we now plan to include the event in our race calender hoping to return next year to defend Peter's title
