It was great to see personal best times at today’s Cutteslowe Park time trials for Shawn Merry, Robert Merry (for the third consecutive Parkrun) and Graça Craft, while Stuart Craft wasn’t too far off his best and Shay Dixon equalled the PB achieved last time out with a strong, proud finish. Injured Andrew Craft’s little sister, Rebecca - an enthusiastic young prospect, also ran a lap of the course for the fun of it today.
The only sour note of the morning was that Peter Wright didn’t have the opportunity to capitalise on his recent top form with his own record time, due to a pulled muscle on the first lap of the course.
Graça had been winding the boys up all week boasting that she’d whoop them, so this seemed to have provided the necessary ingredient to motivate them into all out performances. The Merry brothers, who had spent the three laps of the course looking over their shoulder for Graça, crossed the finish line gasping for air. Shawn looked shattered for the first time, while Robert actually asked: ‘Are you supposed to feel sick when you finish a race?’ the obvious answer being ‘only when you've given everything you’ve got!’ – something each of our runners can proudly admit to this morning.
